Program Description:

Whilst average life expectancy at birth has reached 78 years for women in high-income countries, it is less than 46 years for men in sub-Saharan Africa. For millions of children in low- to middle-income countries, the biggest health challenge is to survive until their fifth birthday and their chances of doing so are less than they were a decade ago. This is a result of the continuing impact of major communicable diseases – tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS. Many health problems transcend geographic boundaries, as should appropriate approaches and solutions. The concept of 'international health' describes and addresses these realities. The Masters in International Health is a full-time course over 12 months that prepares students to work in changing environments with diverse populations, and to respond competently to the challenges presented by permeable geographic and cultural boundaries. Students gain competence in identifying and analysing factors that cause disparities in health status, health resources, and access to health information and health services, particularly for marginalised and vulnerable people. One of the key features of this programme is the opportunity to participate in a one-week field trip to Geneva, Switzerland. This includes workshops and meetings with World Health Organization staff, a visit to the United Nations and the Red Cross offices and various NGOs. The visit takes place in the University Easter vacation.
