Department of Mathematical Sciences
The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a founding department of the University of Essex. It is a small and friendly department which gives the opportunity for students to build good relationships with staff members.
The Department has strengths in several areas of mathematics, including semigroups, combinatorics, applied probability, operational research, bioinformatics and mathematical modelling of biological and ecological systems.
Staff in the Department are strongly committed to research and to the promotion of graduate activities. Staff members have international reputations and are world leaders in their individual specialisms. They have published over 600 papers in learned journals, as well as several well-regarded textbooks.
The research of the Department is structured in three groups. Staff participate in several groups or between linked and other departments. The three groups reflect the major fields of mathematical sciences research of the group members: Computational Combinatorics and Probability (CCP); Evolutionary Computation and Optimisation (ECO); Mathematical Biology, Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (MBBB).
