Program Description:

Insufficient physical activity is the fourth leading risk factor for premature mortality. It has recently been recognised as a pandemic and is a global public health issue. Based within the University’s Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences, the new MSc Physical Activity for Health aims to build workforce capacity by drawing from the health sciences of psychology, physiology and epidemiology to enhance knowledge and understanding of the global issues pertinent to physical activity for health. Who is this programme for? The programme is aimed at recent graduates from a range of disciplines (e.g. sport and exercise sciences, health sciences, psychology, epidemiology, and physiology), and at the existing national and international workforce in the area of physical activity and public health. Why study this programme? The programme aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the global issues pertinent to physical activity for health and enhance opportunities for employment in a number of physical activity related careers, for example in health promotion, primary care/community health care, physical activity development, physical activity and health consultancy, the health and fitness industry, and research. The programme is directed and taught by members of the University’s Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PAHRC), which is led by the internationally-renowned professor of Physical Activity, Professor Nanette Mutrie. You’ll benefit from an exciting and dynamic environment where your teaching is informed by the latest research. What will you study? To gain the masters qualification you will study the following compulsory courses: - Physical Activity for Health - Psychology of Physical Activity - Assessment of Physical Activity & Body Composition - Physical Activity for Health Across the Lifespan - Understanding Research Concepts - Research Process - Dissertation You will also choose two option courses in semester two of your studies.
