University of Edinburgh
College of Science and Engineering
Biochemistry is the bridge between biology and chemistry; it is fundamental to all biological processes and is practised in a wide range of biological fields.
By studying the structures and functions of biomolecules - the energetics, interactions, regulation and downstream signalling of biochemical pathways - and comparing pathways from different species and organisms, you will gain an understanding and appreciation of how living systems operate, survive and die.
With an emphasis on teaching modern biochemical practical skills, independent thinking and critical analysis we will equip you to contribute to the future development of biochemistry by working on emerging biological problems, developing new products or tackling diseases.
Extensive range of courses
We offer an exceptionally broad choice of courses from our School and from other Schools in the University; this allows you to customise the programme to your own interests and career aspirations.
The School of Biological Sciences is the largest school of biology in the UK. With a wealth of internationally-renowned academics and state-of-the-art instrumentation, we are leaders in fundamental biological research and innovative multi-disciplinary science.
Our cross-disciplinary programme is supported by world-class research facilities to enable you to explore the molecular details of all biological processes in a wide variety of organisms.
We can offer strong research links with experts in our Centre for Translational and Chemical Biology, which provides facilities and expertise to promote interdisciplinary research across biology, chemistry and medicine.
International Student Requirements:
If English is not your first language, you must be able to meet the minimum standards that are set out by the College and recommended by the University. As much of the programme involves giving presentations and writing up research quickly, we would strongly recommend that your language skills exceed the minimum requirements. For the demands of this programme we would suggest IELTS 7.0 or a TOEFL-iBT of 100.
You can find further information on specific conditions and exemptions, as well as suitable forms of documentation, on the International students website.
