M.Sc.-Mathematics, Grad. Dip.-Mathematics,
This programme introduces you to mathematics at greater depth than could be achieved in an undergraduate course. You will be able to study a variety of topics in advanced level taught units designed specifically for students who have a keen interest in the subject. As part of this MSc course you will also write a dissertation under the supervision of an established researcher. The programme provides maximum flexibility to take account of your mathematics background and your interests. It can be taken full-time or part-time. The degree offers sought-after qualifications leading to employment in industry, business, education, public administration and to research careers in industry or academia. The course also strengthens your general and academic competence and helps to develop important transferable skills, including the ability to present complex situations and to analyse them carefully. Mathematics will also help you to solve abstract or concrete problems by the correct application of logical and scientific procedures. Approximately half the programme consists of four advanced taught units, chosen in consultation with the supervisor, from several areas of mathematics. Normally students take two 20 credit modules in each semester. These taught modules are supplemented by informal problem sessions. Assessment is by coursework and examination. The second half of this programme consists of a dissertation. This is a critical survey in an area of mathematics or in the applications of mathematics. It also includes an introductory unit on relevant research methods, specially designed to provide you with the essential research skills required to undertake a full independent research project. Early on in the academic year you will agree the topic of the dissertation with your supervisor who will often have particular expertise and research experience in your chosen area.
