History (SSEES) MA

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The MA in History provides a unique range of options in the history of the region from the early modern period to the present. The SSEES area could be summed up as Cold War Europe from the Adriatic to the Arctic, and from Vienna to....well, Vladivostok. But these are lands where mighty empires and many nations and peoples have interacted and competed over the centuries: the Russian Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Habsburg Monarchy, the Ottoman Empire, the German Empire, and their successor states - especially the Soviet Union and its satellites. You are encouraged to choose a range of courses that is as diverse in geography as it is varied in approach. The MA programme is especially rich in courses exploring the relationship between power and culture. Students are encouraged to develop their language skills. All students do a dissertation of 10-12,000 words, worth 60 credits, and one compulsory course, Historical methods and approaches: stories of Central and Eastern Europe (20 credits). The remaining 100 credits are selected from a vast range of options, including languages and courses from other departments and disciplines.
