Program Information

Degrees Offered:

MA, PG Certificate, PG Diploma

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The MA in Mental Health Studies introduces students to the theory and practice of mental health social work. In particular it explores: models of mental distress; risk and evidence based decision making; mental health law; partnerships in mental health; and values and ethics in mental health.

All candidates will be eligible for a University postgraduate award: a Postgraduate Certificate; Postgraduate Diploma or MA in Mental Health Studies. The course is taught alongside students training to be approved mental health professionals (AMHPs) and students will have the benefit of participating in practice workshops with a range of mental health practitioners. Much of the course is taught by way of case studies, experiential learning and group discussion rather than didactic lectures.

The course is taught in blocks between October and March and is assessed through essays, case studies, examination and course work. Online activities and support are an integral part of the course and students are expected to participate in these.
