Internationally, healthcare is becoming an important industry sector with posts in organising and changing healthcare systems prominent as well as jobs in the pharmaceuticals and health technologies industries. As the composition of the world's population changes, there are increasing challenges about how to plan, manage and organise care for an ageing population. Simultaneously, pandemics, viral diseases, natural disasters, terrorism and wars bring their own challenges for managers planning how to respond. Managing expensive technologies, such as telemedicine and pharmaceuticals is crucial for health systems, as these continue to demand increasing expenditures and patients expect access to the best treatment. Managers are required with strategy and change skills, financial acumen and that can interact with the public and professionals. Skills in communication, dealing with ever-changing horizons and world-wide knowledge about health are therefore important. This course adopts an international perspective on healthcare as a business sector, focusing on key international health system imperatives, including strategic envisioning of health system excellence, leading and enabling change, organisational and professional boundary-spanning, economics, patient and public engagement and political awareness; while also providing a grounding in broad-spectrum business principles.
