There has been a huge increase in interest in Environmental Microbiology since the late 1980s, resulting from the rapid development of novel experimental approaches and techniques, particularly in the field of molecular biology. This exciting field encompasses studies of contaminated land and bioremediation, agricultural uses of micro-organisms, tracking pathogens in the environment and many other areas. A successful environmental microbiologist will need a thorough grounding in basic microbiology and molecular biology, but this must be combined with knowledge of field techniques and environmental science.
