The programme consists of a full year’s supervised research in one of the research areas listed below. Regular discussions between the student and supervisor form the core of the study. The preparation of the thesis begins early on in the programme and, as such, the student needs to engage with the mathematical research ethos most promptly.
The University has one of the finest mathematics libraries in the UK, which houses an extensive collection of books and periodicals and, in addition, the Department of Mathematics has a reading room containing an impressive collection of research books available to staff and students alike.
Postgraduate research students have the use of their own desk and open access PC in the postgraduate research laboratory. The software platform available provides (La)TeX, Mathematica, MS Office, email and browsing clients allowing students to fully interact with members of staff, local and off-campus online resources.
Schools and Workshops for postgraduates, given by world-class mathematicians, are offered on a regular basis at Swansea. Furthermore, throughout the year there are regular seminars and colloquia given by staff and research visitors to the Department of Mathematics.
