Program Description:
We have been offering highly distinctive degree courses in the social and cultural study of sport and leisure for over 25 years. The long-running MA Sport and Culture offers advanced level study of sport in society. Our expert and experienced staff have finely tuned a programme of study that guides you through existing research and enables you to apply theories and concepts to new areas of sport and culture.
Designed to create critical debate and enquiry into the contemporary and historical relationship between sport and culture, you will develop your academic skills and abilities. You will adopt an independent approach to theorising aspects of sport that hold particular resonance. You will be encouraged to draw on your experience of sport through seminars, tutorials and assessments, and, in consultation with a tutor, select a research area for the dissertation.
The MA Sport and Culture is run from the Centre for Scientific and Cultural Research in Sport (CSCRS). The highly motivated and dynamic lecturers are all active researchers, with interest areas at the cutting edge of academic engagement with sport and leisure. Staff research interests inform their teaching on the MA, and include:
media sport
sport celebrities and sport spectacles
lifestyle sports
sport ethnography
sport, leisure and consumption
sport and gender (masculinity and femininity)
sport and race (including whiteness)
national identity and sport
sport and the body
the cultural history of sport and leisure.
Guest lectures from invited speakers supplement the programme, and students are given encouragement to attend sociology of sport conferences and seminars outside the University.
