Program Description:

This programme prepares students for employment in local, national and international non-profit organisations. It is suitable for recent graduates wanting to develop a career in the sector, for those wishing to change sectors and for those in the sector wishing to develop their understanding and broaden their skills. Students are prepared for leadership and managerial roles in non-profit organisations by analysing the complex environment in which these organisations work and making appropriate responses to the distinctive challenges faced by these organisations. Key areas of study The nature of civil society and understanding the environment of non-profit organisations. Applied organisational theory and behaviour. Applied management skills – financial management, marketing and managing volunteers. Options from either human rights and global governance or international development. Reflective (service) learning and practical experience through a work placement. Special features Students on the programme go on a work placement, which is organised by the University, for two days a week with a non-profit organisation. Roehampton’s Centre for the Study of Voluntary and Community Activity holds regular seminars that students are encouraged to attend. The University is also home to Crucible, the only recognised centre of excellence in human rights and social justice education in the country. Research areas Organisation leadership. The placement is organised by Roehampton University. Part-time students are normally already working in the sector, but please do discuss your requirements with us. Students do not get paid for their placement, but may receive travel expenses depending on the organisation.
