Program Description:

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the UK's leading research universities and is located at the heart of Europe's largest concentration of creative industries. In September 2009 we launched an innovative inter-disciplinary training programme in the science and technologies that are transforming the creative sector. Our mission is to produce post-graduates who combine world-class technical and creative skills and who have a unique vision of how digital technology transforms creative possibilities and social economies . The unique 4 year Ph.D. programme and 1 year Masters by Research are built around core courses in advanced research methods, interaction design and digital media processing, production and recording techniques and optional specialist modules ranging from Digital Audio Effects through Digital Rights Management to Contemporary Performance. You will work under the supervision of internationally recognised experts in: Digital Music Digital Video Human Interaction Performance and Live Art You will also develop a working partnership with one of our strategic collaborators including: BBC, The British Film Institute, last.fm, SONY Computer Entertainment Europe, BT, United visual Artists, Leanmeanfightingmachine. The Masters by Research in Media and Arts Technology is an innovative full-time one-year programme that combines advanced technical and creative skills with extended placements from amongst a range of industrial and public-sector partner organizations. On entry to the programme you will be given a personal needs training assessment that will identify the areas of expertise you will develop over the course of the year. We offer advanced modules which cover topics ranging from advanced technical skills through human interaction to performance and live art. We also offer training in professional skills including entrepreneurship and technology transfer. For further details please see our website. Programme outline The programme is comprised of: A series of 4 advanced taught modules completed in Semester 1 - September to January Expert-led Group Projects - January to March An Advanced Placement Project with an external partner in Semesters 2 and 3 - March to September Semester 1 You will take three specially tailored core modules: Advanced Research Methods Interactive Digital Multimedia Techniques (including processing/Max/MSP/Jitter /Arduino) Contemporary Studio Production Techniques (ie video production, audio production project work in teams and a critical essay on a novel use of technology in media or arts practice) And one optional modules from a list of options: Fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing Digital Broadcasting Java Programming Design for Human Interaction Multimedia Systems Computer Vision and Neural Networks C++ for Image Processing Foundations of Information Retrieval XML and Structured Information Distributed Systems and Security Performance Research (tailored) Semesters 2 and 3 Advanced Project Placement - six-month placement with one of our partners on a topic devised between host, student and academic supervisor. A written thesis and public viva are held in late August. You will find a list of external partners on our website. Entry requirements We invite applications from outstanding individuals with any Arts, Engineering or Science background. You must be able to demonstrate academic achievement to the level of an upper second class Bachelors degree (or higher), excellent creative, critical and analytic skills and strong programming or mathematical abilities. Assessment Students may be required to take written examinations in May/June in their chosen module, some are coursework and report only. Advanced Project Placement is assessed by thesis and public viva in late August Advanced Research Methods is not assessed but attendance is required Interactive Digital Multimedia Techniques is assessed through project work, reports and presentations Contemporary Studio Production Techniques is assessed through project work, reports, presentations and a critical essay To obtain an MSc students must gain passes in all four modules with an overall average of 50 per cent (their chosen module, two core assessed modules plus the Advanced Project Placement).
