Urban Water Planning

Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Format: Online

Program Description:

This course is delivered by national experts in sustainable drainage and water planning through web-based learning. You will learn through individual and group work with online and telephone access to tutors at the University and rapid response to questions and problems. The course is designed to meet the needs of urban planners, architects and engineers who are faced with finding solutions to problems created by climate change and our changing cities – controlling flooding and environmental quality, making space for water, integrating the needs of different community interests. It is designed for the professional in practice. Delivery of the course is by distance learning, supplemented by periods in Dundee to examine best practice examples and learn from the leaders in the field. The course is interdisciplinary and you will have the opportunity to develop solutions with a range of other professionals. The course includes a significant amount of information from European countries and has an international flavour. This course gives the latest thinking on planning for flooding and environmental quality in and around cities, particularly using the key concepts of flood resilience and sustainable urban drainage systems. These problems can only be resolved through an understanding of the planning system, the causes and impacts of floods and water pollution, how conflicts with roads and transportation systems can be resolved, and the design and implementation of developments. It is a professionally recognised course leading to a Masters degree. Since you learn primarily through distance learning, you work at your own pace at your home or office, but with excellent access to staff and other students through mails, chat rooms, telephone discussions and video links. Although it is delivered principally online, in one module you will attend visits and workshops based in Dundee. The course is heavily based on a range of real case study examples. Supporting resources are both online and in support CDs.
