Program Description:

We specialise in research supervision in the fields of language and communication disorders, language acquisition (first, second and bilingual), applied and educational linguistics, TESOL and cross-cultural communication.Applied linguistics, TESOL and cross-cultural communication including: bilingual education (Dr M Lin); computer-assisted language learning (CALL) (Mr S Windeatt); discourse analysis (Dr P Seedhouse, Dr C Jenks, Dr A Firth and Dr S Walsh); language testing (Mr S Windeatt); psycholinguistics and second language acquisition (Professor V Cook and Professor M Pienemann); socio-interactional approach to language learning (Dr P Seedhouse ,Dr N Shameem, Dr S Walsh and Dr A Firth); writing systems (Professor V Cook); cross-cultural interaction (Dr T Young, Dr P Sercombe); English as a lingua franca (Dr A Firth).Speech including: acquired communication disorders (Professor D Howard, Dr J Morris, Dr J Webster and Dr A Whitworth); bilingual and cross-linguistic studies of language acquisition (Dr C Letts and Dr G Khattab); experimental phonetics (Professor G Docherty and Dr G Khattab); motor speech disorders, neurogenic voice and fluency disorders, psychosocial aspects of rehabilitation in neurological illness (Dr N Miller and Mrs N Lallini); sociophonetics and language variation (Professor G Docherty and Dr G Khattab); specific language impairment (SLI) in children (Dr T Klee, Dr D James and Dr C Letts); phonological acquisition and disorder in children (Professor S Stokes).
