This programme offers a broader and deeper knowledge of the classical world than at undergraduate level, together with training in research techniques. It is flexible, can be tailored to individual interests and involves a considerable amount of supervised self-study. Our masters students may choose one of four themes to focus on in their taught modules: (i) Ancient Concepts of Divinity, (ii) Philosophy, Science and Medicine, (iii) Rhetoric and Historiography, and (iv) Reception and Recreation of Texts. These thematic modules are generally taught as tutorials, giving our masters students generous access to staff who are currently producing internationally recognized research in these areas. Students are also required to take a module in research training methods and either Greek or Latin (though students who can demonstrate excellent language skills may have the language requirement waved and be allowed to pursue an additional themed module at the discretion of the Degree Programme Director). Each student will then write a 14,000 word dissertation on a topic of his or her own choice and under the close supervision of a staff member with related research interests.
