This MA is designed for both experienced teachers and students who have little or no teaching experience, and provides a wide range of exciting modules in applied linguistics and TESOL. It enables you to pursue your own particular interests by choosing appropriate specialist options, including modules in TESOL, second language acquisition, teaching English to young learners, discourse analysis, cross-cultural communication, and media technology for language learning.You take compulsory and optional modules (120 credits). If you are an experienced teacher you take TESOL theory and practice and research methods in applied linguistics and choose from a range of specialist modules, some of which are specifically designed for experienced teachers. If you have little or no teaching experience you take an introduction to TESOL, core issues in second language acquisition, and research methods in applied linguistics. You then choose from a range of specialist modules which includes: computer-assisted language learning; video in language teaching; discourse analysis; second language acquisition; TESOL for young learners; developing thinking skills; cross-cultural communication; educational management; counselling. All students also complete either a dissertation in their specialist area, or a software portfolio involving the design, production and evaluation of teaching materials (60 credits).
