Modern and Contemporary Writing
The MA explores the diversity of modern and contemporary writing from England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and North America. It also offers a unique opportunity to combine critical and creative work for those interested in developing their own writing The critical modules in the program are concerned with how literary study has evolved in recent years to accommodate changing notions of cultural identity, nationhood, gender, knowledge, language and meaning. Hence there is a particular emphasis upon the ways in which modern and contemporary literature challenges or affirms assumptions about writing, critical practice, aesthetics, culture and identity. Students can look forward to the comparative study of texts, issues anddebates from different national and cultural contexts. Since the MA is concerned with both critical and creative writing, ideas and texts will be approached from the perspective of the writer as well as of theorists and critics.
