The department has excellent facilities, and provides strong support for students. The lecturing staff are also active researchers, and have one of the best records of research publications in the Pacific region. Honours and Masters degrees are often pursued to give graduates better professional qualifications, and the main purpose of study at the Ph.D. level is to prepare for careers in research and development. The University of Canterbury hosts the most powerful supercomputer in the southern hemisphere as well as the Human Interface Technology Lab NZ, a major national and international centre for research.
