Faculty of Arts and the Humanities
This MA programme focuses on the various aspects of American culture and society. In addition to studying popular culture and intellectual history, students will draw parallels between cultural and political history and between literature and art. This field of study was first established at major universities in the USA after World War II. Whereas the focus then was largely on the supposed uniformity of American cultural identity, it has now shifted to the diversity and dissensions within American multicultural society. Graduates of this programme will be knowledgeable about the culture and society of the United States. They will also have an extensive knowledge of the key discussions about the origins, identity and diversity of American culture and society. They will be able to analyze the often problematic political and cultural interaction between the United States and the rest of the world and will have an understanding of important concepts such as Americanisation, anti-Americanisation and globalisation.
