Program Description:

The Leiden Department of History is characterised by its international orientation. The department of Dutch History, for example, studies the relationships between the Netherlands and Europe and the world outside of Europe, while European history is studied in relation to the developments in North America and within the framework of the history of European expansion and of global interaction. The Leiden Department of History has chairs in Ancient History, Medieval History, Dutch History, Early Modern History, Contemporary History, American History and Economic & Social History. Besides these chairs there are within the wider Leiden Faculty of Arts chairs in Latin American History, Turkish History, South Asian History, Southeast Asian History, Chinese History and Japanese History.
