The programme in Slavic Languages and Cultures was introduced in 1913. In that year, Nicolaas van Wijk (1880-1941) became the first professor in Slavic languages at Leiden University. The programme is linked to that of the University of Amsterdam and offers a one year Master's programme in Slavic languages and cultures. In Leiden, the focus is on Slavic linguistics, whereas in Amsterdam the focus is on Slavic literature as well as Polish, Czech and Serbo-Croatian language and literature.
