Program Description:

The importance of thorough knowledge of the English language is becoming more and more obvious in a modern world in which communication increasingly takes place in English. Not only is English the most widespread language in everyday international communication, it is also the language of science, of international law and business. The Leiden English Department is one of the best-known departments in Europe, and has built up a strong network of international contacts with English departments all over the world. The Department offers a full-time and part-time curriculum in which all aspects of the study of English are represented, from Old English texts to modern literature, from the earliest history of the English language to present-day varieties of written and spoken English as well as linguistics.
