Program Description:

The Centre for Studies in Science Policy (CSSP) as an interdisciplinary teaching and research programme is the only one of its kind in the Indian university system. Designed as a combined teaching and research effort, the CSSP aims at exploring various dimensions of the science-technology-society interface. While centrally oriented as an academic programme, the CSSP also directs its research agendas at questions and challenges that are relevant to contemporary policy concerns. The Centre also aims at undertaking research assignments on science, technology and innovation policies and related areas such as university – industry relations; intellectual property rights; gender relations in science and technology; globalisation of innovation and internationalisation of R&D; technology and environment; scientists in organisations; and technology futures studies. The Centre is open to students for admission from a variety of social and natural sciences, technology studies, engineering, medicine, law and management disciplines. The current focus of teaching and research at the Centre is on science and technology policy analyses including innovation policies; sociology of science and technology; social history of science and technology; economics of technological change and innovation studies; technology futures studies; gender studies in science and technology; science and technology for development; international affairs in science and technology and management of intellectual property rights. The Centre offers M.Phil/Ph.D. and direct Ph.D. programmes. The M.Phil. programme requires completion of 24 credits in four semesters. Direct Ph.D. programme is open to scholars who have completed an M.Phil. degree in one of the social or natural science disciplines or demonstrated their research capability by way of equivalent published work in science policy studies. The Centre strongly recommends such direct Ph.D. scholars to audit courses at the M.Phil. level for two semesters while pursuing research. Students while pursuing research have received research fellowships from various sources such as University Grants Commission through NET; Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Fellowships; Senior Research Fellowships from CSIR; ICSSR and other institutions and agencies. Currently in 2010, over 60 research scholars are on the CSSP rolls pursuing research in the M.Phil/Ph.D and direct Ph.D programmes. During the last few years CSSP students were employed by reputed national and international institutions such as the Planning Commission, New Delhi; National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies (NISTADS) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) New Delhi; The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI); National Research Development Corporation (NRDC); National Productivity Council (NPC); Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI); National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM); Institute of Development Studies (IDS, UK); WWF-India, New Delhi; Centre for Management in Agriculture, Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad); Centre for Technology and Trade, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (New Delhi); Indian Institute of Public Administration (New Delhi), Research and Information Systems (RIS), New Delhi; World Bank; UNDP; and Innovation Management and Policy Programme, The Australian National University (Canberra, Australia).
