Bucerius Law School also offers a Summer School in International Business Law, Bucerius/WHU Master of Law and Business - Joachim Herz Program, Doctoral / Post-Doctoral Degrees
The Bucerius/WHU Master of Law and Business (MLB) – Joachim Herz Program is a one-year degree program which is jointly offered by Bucerius Law School and the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management and generously sponsored by the Joachim Herz Foundation.
Founded in 2000, Bucerius Law School in Hamburg is Germany’s leading law school, offering an academically challenging, practice-oriented and bilingual legal education with a focus on international business law. The student body currently consists of approximately 550 LL.B., 50 MLB and 280 doctoral candidates. Bucerius Law School is a subsidiary of the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius. Most MLB classes take place on the Bucerius campus in metropolitan Hamburg.
WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management is a private, research-based and internationally-oriented business school emphasizing entrepreneurial spirit. WHU offers B.Sc., M.Sc., MBA, Executive MBA, doctoral and post-doctoral programs in business administration. WHU is constantly ranked among the top business schools in Europe. The MLB students spend two weeks on the WHU campus in picturesque Vallendar, near Cologne.
Both schools are accredited.
Bucerius and WHU graduates are also among the most sought-after young professionals in their respective fields.
The interdisciplinary English-taught, one-year MLB Program is a response to the increasing need in the global economy for legal and business professionals with a solid knowledge of international business law and international management experience.
Therefore, the Program is designed for candidates with a first degree in law, business or economics. Graduates of other disciplines with a demonstrated interest in law and business have also been accepted in the past. Prior professional experience is an asset. The percentage of German participants is approximately 30%.
Program enrollment is limited to around 55 participants who generally represent over 30 countries from around the world. This ensures individual attention and a very intercultural experience.
Virtually all courses are oriented toward one of two major topics: the founding and expansion of an enterprise, and the negotiation, performance and resolution of disputes arising out of a purchase and sale agreement for goods shipped from Asia to Europe. Students take courses relating to both topics.
The academic year begins at the end of August and is divided into four sessions with subsequent exam weeks. In the spring session, the students also complete an eight-week internship. The summer session includes a Master’s thesis phase, a capstone course to consolidate the different aspects of the program and a one-week social project. This last program component reflects our belief that future leaders must have not only an excellent academic background; they must also be ready to shoulder responsibility in the societies in which they live. Graduation takes place in the end of August/beginning of September.
The Program draws on the faculty resources of both Bucerius Law School and WHU and brings in adjunct professors from the practicing legal and business communities. Instruction is internationally and comparatively oriented; the teaching style is characterized by open dialogue and intensive support of students by faculty members.
MLB Program staff actively support participants in obtaining a suitable internship as well as in taking care of accommodation and insurance needs.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition for the MLB Program is € 22,000.
A number of (partial) scholarships and tuition waivers are available based on merit and need. Additionally, students from EURO countries can also consider applying for the WHU Brain Capital tuition financing concept, a tuition loan plan which allows participants to pay the tuition after the MLB Program.
