Program Description:

Inspirational teaching begins at the heart of artistry at Rutgers University. The Ed.M. Dance Education program understands artistry and teaching as symbiotic by nature and our community realizes how important it is for individuals to continue to inform their artistic pursuits. The individual’s own evolving artistic knowledge is the foundation from which we encourage the development of a dance teaching practice as a new channel of artistic inquiry. Grappling with how to transform artistic knowledge into meaningful learning experiences for others is what is at the heart of graduate study in our program. Enriched by a unique partnership between the Graduate School of Education and New Jersey's premier college conservatory, Mason Gross School of the Arts, the Dance Education Program is a nationally accredited degree program and a model of excellence for the preparation of dance artist-educators. We offer extensive, mentored fieldwork, practicum and teaching internships in NJ and NYC schools, studios, university classes, community-based programs including our accredited American Ballet Theatre children's and teen's program, our Polestar Pilates Teacher Training program and our Summer Dance Conservatory for middle and high school dancers. Students may continue to improve their artistry in our technique classes and by participating in repertory experiences on-campus or in NYC. Part-time and full-time enrollment options are available. Students may take leave to pursue professional performance opportunities and have up to five years to complete the degree. Students complete the program with a solid education degree, a teaching-artistry portfolio, NJ K-12 Dance teacher certification (with reciprocity in NY and 35 other states) and the option of additional accreditations such as ABT Teacher Accreditation, Polestar Pilates Teacher Certification or completion of credits toward NJ Health and Physical Education K-12 Certification. The Rutgers EdM program produced the recipients of the 2012 and 2013 New Jersey Department of Education Distinguished Student Teacher Award. Our alumni have successfully competed for employment teaching dance in K-12 schools, college programs and community programs and continue to perform and produce their individual artistic work outside of their teaching contexts. We also embrace our alumni who transition immediately into the audition circuit prior to taking long-term teaching commitments. We offer numerous, competitive opportunities for resume-building and financial support that include: A funded Graduate Teaching Assistantship position teaching undergraduate dance (RU salary, benefits and tuition remission) Assisting and teaching in our American Ballet Theatre accredited youth program On-Line Teaching Support assistantships Merit and financial need scholarships Summer High School and Middle School Dance Conservatory employment Study abroad opportunities include: BFA + EdM: United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, Taipei EdM: South Africa Our central location in New Brunswick, New Jersey has allowed the program to develop resources in nearby New York City as well as NJ and PA, providing a wide array of networking opportunities for students. The Rutgers campus offers spacious studio facilities and a wide array of university recreation on a beautiful, suburban campus.
