Graduate Program in Anatomy and Neurobiology
The Department offers M.Sc . and Ph.D. programs in Anatomy and Neurobiology. The student may obtain an interdisciplinary degree in Anatomy/Neuroscience by fulfilling Neuroscience program requirements. All students entering the M.Sc . program are expected to advance to the Ph.D. program. Most students accepted into our graduate program have a strong background in biological sciences but some also come from the medical and allied health professions. Students with an A-minus or higher average during the last two years of their previous training are strongly encouraged to apply. The goals of our graduate program are to provide students with a sound background in the morphological sciences, to provide in-depth research training in anatomy, neurobiology or cell biology and to introduce students to the teaching of anatomy and/or aspects of neuroscience. Students undertake a research project and defend a thesis under the guidance of a faculty member and an advisory committee. Students present their results at departmental seminars, and at national and international scientific meetings. The acquisition of teaching skills is an integral and important part of the program. Therefore, all graduate students are required to assist in laboratory teaching or an equivalent to medical, dental, health profession or science students up to 40 hours each year. Graduate students are also provided the opportunity to lecture to these students.
As a part of their training, students enroll in formal classes, the content of which complements their research interests. They are provided with an opportunity to study details of certain aspects of the structure of the human body through courses in histology, embryology, neuroanatomy and gross anatomy and, in addition, may study other elements of biological science through courses in cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, endocrinology and immunology .
International Student Requirements:
If the language of instruction of your prior academic degree(s) is not English, a TOEFL or similar English language competency test, is required. A TOEFL score of at least 580 is required.
A statement of preferred graduate research topic and career goals is required. Preference is given to students that expect to complete a Ph.D. (even if they enter as MSc students).
