Program Description:

The Department of Biochemistry offers a graduate program leading to the M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Biochemistry and Food Science. The program of study consists of courses and research work that are designed to equip the students with the knowledge and experience required of modern researchers. The research specializations of the faculty encompass protein, lipid & membrane biochemistry; molecular biology & cellular development; metabolic regulation & nutritional biochemistry; food science, food engineering . Based on their background, students are advised on their course work by the respective Supervisory Committees. PhD candidates undergo a comprehensive examination, normally within a year after registration, which assesses their knowledge in general Biochemistry or Food Science, and in their area of specialization. After successful completion of the course requirement (and the comprehensive examination, in the case of the PhD), the student submits a thesis embodying the results of his or her original research. All graduate students are expected to attend and participate regularly in the departmental seminars. The graduate program for full-time students usually takes two years for the M.Sc. (part-time students will require longer periods) and four years for the PhD (part-time not admitted).
