Degrees Offered:

M.Sc. - Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Ph.D. - Pharmacology

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Pharmacology is an understanding of what drugs/chemicals do to the body, and conversely, what the body does to drugs/chemicals. The objective of our program is to deliver a quality educational experience that will ground students in the subject of pharmacology, and to understand and be conversant in this discipline. The Pharmacology program is designed to ensure that, in addition to a solid foundation in the science of Pharmacology, students develop a set of skills (oral, written, laboratory) that will qualify them to seek employment wherever they choose and to enable them to become leaders in their profession. Students lacking previous exposure to Pharmacology are required to take a fourth-year honours level course in Pharmacology (PHAC 4030/4040). All students are required to complete the advanced course in Pharmacology (PHAC 7130). Course requirements can be tailored to the interests and needs of the student; these include a number of interdisciplinary courses and specialized pharmacology seminar courses. For students uncertain as to their research direction, a “rotations” course is available to allow exposure and laboratory training in two laboratories for four months each in the first year. Often, this early work serves as a thesis foundation. Since 1957, the department has produced 114 Ph.D. and 72 M.Sc. graduates. Many have held senior administrative positions in universities as well as the pharmaceutical industry. Many, including more recent graduates, have filed patents and have started their own companies based on their research findings. Although we share a common philosophy of Pharmacology, we offer diversity in scientific background and approach to research questions. Our faculty members are located in a number of world-class, state-of-the-art facilities. The goal of these institutes is to support research (basic and clinical) that will have a direct impact on disease prevention and improving patient care.
