The importance of physics in society is considerable, and the field of investigation of this science is vast : it ranges from elementary particles to the study of the universe. In order to enable the students in physics to get insight in such a broad spectrum of subjects, a thorough preparation is required. More specifically, it is essential they start their physics studies with an extensive knowledge of mathematical methods. This knowledge is necessary for both options, experimental and theoretical physics. The required mathematical basis is implemented in the first year of the first cycle : this year is common to the mathematics and physics education programme. In the second year of the first cycle, many courses are still common to both programmes. As to the physics courses in the first cycle, the emphasis is put on the general principles and methods. Thus, the students get insight in the correlation of experiment with theory. The techniques used to analyse and process data are explained , and critical thinking is stimulated in the construction of physical models.
