In general, the primary aim of the study dentistry is the education of a student to an adequately trained general practitioner who is able to work within a general medical perspective and within a broad social context. This means that a dental surgeon must be able to make a medical diagnosis of a dental / oral problem, must be able to advise the patient on oral prevention and is able to treat general dental problems and evaluate this treatment in a critical way. Moreover, the dental surgeon must have sufficient knowledge, self-criticism and skills to treat a complex problem, if necessary, or to give advises for an advanced specialist treatment. In this respect, attention must also be paid to aspects of health economy and social health care and the dental surgeon. A good communication between the dental surgeon and other medical health workers is also emphasised.
