Since the late 1970's aquaculture expanded from an artisanal, extensive mode of production of aquatic organisms to a rapidly evolving bio-industry. Especially developing countries have a high potential for a fast development of aquaculture, which enables them to support their food-protein requirements and/or to gain foreign currency by exporting high priced seafood. This evolution, however, is based on developments in food technology, species selection, zootechnical aspects, management, automation, disease control, etc. It is accepted that the lack of well-trained specialists may be the bottleneck for further expansion of aquaculture.
