Online masters in social work no GRE [geo-in-name]

Many grads schools with CSWE approval have online MSW programs with no GRE requirement. Other MSW programs only ask applicants for GRE scores if their undergrad GPA falls below a set range. This is encouraging if you want to pursue a master’s in social work after being out of school for some time.

Online MSW Programs with No GRE Requirements

Though many MSW programs do not need the GRE for admissions, there are other criteria in place. These help a school assess each candidate and check their fit for the program they are applying to.

Bachelor’s Degree

The most basic is a bachelor’s degree and official transcripts. These must be from a regionally accredited school, but not limited to a social science major.

Some schools may want to see that you have certain courses under your belt. These may include topics like human biology or human anatomy & physiology. But if you don’t, they may have you take these courses in the first year of your MSW program to catch up.

If you are applying to an Advanced Standing program, your bachelor’s degree must be in social work. It must also be from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Each school sets a time limit for this. Some stipulate you need to earn your BSW within 5 – 6 years of applying for your MSW.

Undergraduate Coursework

Some grad schools want applicants to have a certain number of liberal arts credits.

Fordham University is one example and they look for 18 credits. Rutgers requires candidates to have a statistics course under their belt. Simmons University is another example. They do not have this requirement. But suggest students know how to write a literature review in the APA format.

Minimum GPA

You may need to meet a certain undergraduate grade point average. This range varies from one school to the next.

It is sometimes set lower than 3.0 if you are applying to a traditional MSW. But for Advanced Standing MSW programs, it is often at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

One example is Edinboro University. Applicants to the Regular Two-Year Program must have at least a GPA of 2.8. Those whose GPA is under 2.80 must produce scores from the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Or the general aptitude part of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). They relate the required scores to the applicant’s GPA level.

Reference Letters

Most schools ask for reference letters. Usually these are from people who know you in a professional or school setting.

Someone who can attest that you are ready for the rigor of grad school and/or of advanced social work. If you apply to an Advanced Standing MSW, you may need to ask someone connected to your fieldwork to vouch for you.

Professional Resume

You may need to list your work and volunteer experiences to date. A professional resume also includes your skills and accomplishments (awards etc.).

Personal Statement

A personal statement is also a writing sample. Each school specifies how long it should be and in what format. For instance: ‘3-4 pages, typed and double-spaced in correct APA format’.

Usually, the school wants to see that you can state in clear terms:

  • Why you want to pursue a career in social work
  • What makes you able to value the points of view of diverse population groups
  • How your academic, professional, personal, and volunteer experiences have prepared you for graduate studies in social work
  • What motivates you to apply to the MSW Program at “X” university

TOEFL Scores

If English is not your first language, you must show that you are proficient. This means submitting a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. Or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic score. Some schools may waive this if you earned your degree in an English-speaking country.

Interview

Some schools may conduct face-to-face interviews. This is often for Advanced Standing MSW students. It provides a way to screen candidates and see if they are a fit.

Final Field Education Evaluation

This is usually for Advanced Standing applicants. It is a form that must have signatures of all relevant parties.

Computer and Internet Connection

No joke, some schools like University of New England spell this out. Schools like this want to know you have enough tech skills to navigate online MSW classes.

What Is The Typical Coursework To Expect In An Online MSW Program?

Most CSWE-accredited online MSW program curricula follow guidelines for what you study. This includes a mix of theory, skills labs and field work. In a typical Master of Social Work degree course plan, you may learn specific things at each of two levels. The first is the foundation year. The other, the concentration year.

Depending on the school, this may equal about 60 credits of professional training. Plus, at least 900 clock hours of supervised internship. Some of the foundation topics are familiarize you with the profession. From the history to how to conduct yourself as a social worker. You’ll usually study different clinical assessment and intervention methods as well.

As you move through your program, you may have a chance to focus on a niche practice area. Like military social work, healthcare, trauma, or children and families. Each such area requires specific courses. Then, fieldwork to help you integrate and apply this knowledge into a real setting.

Advanced Standing MSW students may be able to skip most, if not all, foundation year courses. As such, most of their classes may revolve around their chosen concentration. Depending on the school, this may mean about 30 credits of professional training. Plus, about 500 clock hours of supervised internship. Or, the number of hours you have remaining to fulfill your required total.

Here are 6 classes one might take in an online Master of Social Work Program:

1. Intro to Social Work

This type of class may take a broad look at the social work profession. From its history to the features of general practice and settings. Side topics may cover values, ethics and current issues. They’ll often set the stage for students to choose an area of emphasis.

2. Skills for Social Work Practice

This type of class often defines social work skills while also covering ethics. You may learn how to set boundaries and conduct yourself in a professional manner.

The course may also help you develop active listening, and client engagement skills. This includes interviewing and using suitable (empathetic) responses.

3. Human Behavior and the Social Environment I/II

This type of class often takes a deep look at human behavior and growth. It may examine race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexuality, ethnicity and disability. Students usually gain an understanding of a healthy lifespan. Also, how a social context may impact the way people function, behave and develop.

4. Social Work and Economic Justice I/II

This type of class may get to the bottom of social welfare, community issues and policy. It may help students grasp concepts such as power, class, oppression, and poverty. While learning to analyze, one may gain the ability to advocate for policy change.

5. Field Instruction and Seminar

These hands-on experiences are where knowledge meets social work practices. Students have the chance to apply what they learned in core topics to real time work in an agency setting. Here, while supervised, they may work with individuals, families, small groups and communities.

6. Social Work Research

This type of course may focus on general research methods and how to apply them to social work. Some of the topics may cover measuring, sampling and setting up questionnaires. Others may speak to collecting and making sense of the data. Then, using it to assess programs and inform your work with people.

How long is an online Master of Social Work?

A traditional online MSW program usually spans 60 – 64 credits. This may take a fulltime student about two years to finish. The curriculum involves academic classes in tandem with one field placement per year.

The way schools break these hours down varies. At Boston University it’s 480 hours in the Foundation placement. Then, 720 hours in Advanced Placement.

To apply to online MSW program, one needs a bachelor’s degree earned at an accredited school. Some universities also look at GPA and standardized test scores. But this may only occur if an applicant does not have at least a 3.0 GPA.

What is the Difference Between Master of Social Work vs Advanced Standing MSW?

An Advanced Standing MSW is an alternative to a regular MSW program. It offers students with a Bachelor of Social Work a head start on their degree. This may reduce the time (and tuition) it takes to complete an MSW program.

Many schools offer both an MSW regular admissions and Advanced Standing MSW program. Each one has its own curriculum structure, length and admission requirements. But both may help you prepare for social worker licensure depending on your state board. As long as they come with full Council on Social Work Education approval.

What is an Advanced Standing Master of Social Work?

An Advanced Standing MSW program usually spans 30 – 41 credits. This may take a fulltime student about one year to complete.

As with the regular MSW, there are academic classes and a concurrent field placement. The internship may entail 1,200 hours or less depending on prior work. So, this is something to check at the schools on your list.

To apply to an Advanced Standing one-year MSW program, you’ll need a BSW degree. This needs to be from a CSWE-accredited program. Most but not all schools set a limit – like within the last 5 to 6 years.

Apart from this, most schools want to see at least a 3.0 GPA. GRE scores may only matter if your GPA falls below the required range. But Advanced Standing MSW programs often attract people with social work experience. As such, a school may be more interested in what your field evaluations say about you and your work ethic.
