4 Things to Know About Applying for Online EdD Programs No GRE

So, you’re hoping to earn an online doctorate in education, no GRE. Skipping that difficult and expensive test is one major obstacle, averted. But what about requirements besides the GRE? In fact, some graduate schools may choose not to look at applicants’ GRE scores because they place greater emphasis on other parts of the application – like GPA, work experience, or letters of recommendation for admission to their online degrees.

Understanding what EdD programs may look for besides the GRE is key to potentially optimizing your application. So, let’s check out these four other EdD admissions requirements that should be on your radar, if they’re not already:

1. Your Cumulative GPA. While it sounds like an obvious requirement, your GPA may play a bigger role in your application than you imagined. In fact, some grad schools may implement GPA cut-offs when it comes to waiving the GRE. Colorado State University offers a PhD in education, no GRE required…that is, if your cumulative GPAs for your undergraduate and masters/professional GPA are at least 3.0.

2. Work Experience. Often, doctorate degree programs in education are aimed at practitioners who hope to build on past experience in the field they love. So, you may find that your prospective EdD program requires not GRE scores, but some solid work experience to prove you’re an awesome candidate. For instance, the University of Michigan – Flint requires three years of work experience in a P-16 educational institution or related role.

3. Letters of Recommendation. This is a common requirement, and a chance for others to brag about your readiness for pursuing an EdD. While each program may have different requirements, two to three letters is a typical ask. And, programs may specify who the letters should be from – like graduate faculty, supervisors, or community leaders. Pay close attention to the instructions, to make sure you’re requesting letters from the right people.  It's possible you can find schools that don't require letters of recommendation out there as well.

4. Essay or Statement of Purpose. Whenever you’re asked to submit a written response in your application, it may be a chance to really wow admissions with the quality of your writing and ideas. So, take this one seriously. As an example, Concordia University – Portland requires a Letter of Intent that describes your goals, plans, commitment to earning the degree, and why you chose Concordia.
