United States Chemistry PhD Programs | Doctorate in Chemistry
PhD in Chemistry Programs Overview
Students pursuing a PhD in Chemistry spend a great deal of time involved in independent research, study and conducting experiments. Research topics may be in theoretical, physical and organic chemistry, though students often have the freedom to choose their specialization. A PhD is an opportunity for students to learn about the basic principles underlying chemical sciences, make an original contribution to science and apply the theory they learnt as an undergraduate.
Admission to doctoral level chemistry programs typically requires a Bachelor/Master degree in chemistry or a related field, examinations that evaluate knowledge and research skills, and possibly completion of a research project. Most programs last from 3 to 8 years and involve coursework and a dissertation for completion of the degree. Students are often encouraged to develop their communication skills by giving presentations on their research findings.
Graduates of Chemistry PhD programs may be prepared for higher-level positions in the field, academia, or continuing education with post-doctoral research.
Choosing a Doctorate Program in Chemistry: Online or On-Campus?
Depending on your unique study needs, GradSchools.com can help you find campus and Online PhD in Chemistry programs. Some universities might actually offer distance-learning formats of their onsite programs, so you are not sacrificing quality. If you prefer the real classroom to the virtual one, search for graduate schools by location, choosing the city, state or country you prefer to study in.
Potential PhD Chemistry Coursework
In addition to independent research and a dissertation, there are general courses that students may be able to choose themselves, depending on their interests. They will also complete research seminars and laboratory components, which will give them the
opportunity to apply what they have learned in a hands-on setting. Students who aspire to teach Chemistry may also be able to teach lower-level classes or assist a professor in order to gain the experience. Some of the potential coursework students may choose from might include:
- Physical biochemistry
- Inorganic chemistry
- Advanced analytical chemistry
- Organic synthesis
- Physical organic chemistry
- Quantum mechanics
- Principles of chemistry
- Physical chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Chemistry PhD Specializations
Common concentrations offered by doctoral programs in chemistry include analytical chemistry, materials chemistry, and biochemistry.
Career Options for Chemistry PhD Graduates
Graduates with a Doctorate degree may choose a variety of potential career paths. According to the BLS, while the job outlook for chemists is slow employment growth between 2014 and 2024, candidates with a PhD may have better job prospects, and are qualified for some higher-level positions, such as leading research teams or teaching at the post-collegiate level. Popular career options include:
- General chemist
- Food Scientist
- Research Chemist
- Forensic Chemist
- Analytical Chemist
- Chemical Laboratory Scientist
- Air Quality Chemist
- Chemistry teacher postsecondary
- Natural Science Managers
