Campus Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner Programs near Milwaukee
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs prepare graduates to potentially assume greater practice and leadership roles in healthcare organizations, evaluate and apply research that contributes to better patient outcomes, and promote a more effective and efficient healthcare system. Whereas the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing is a research-oriented degree that often is used as a path to a career in academia, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a clinical degree. Students will learn to use evidence and research in a clinical setting as opposed to conducting independent research and reporting on their findings. A nurse with a DNP on Campus degree strives to improve health care systems and work with patients, different populations and within the community.
Typically, a doctor of nursing practice program incorporates fieldwork to allow you to apply your learning in a real-world environment. As a hands-on field, students might benefit from learning in a group environment, as well as interacting with professors and classmates. Additionally, many graduate schools design their programs for working students, and the hours may be more convenient than you might imagine. Plus, you get access to the university facilities, such as libraries, laboratories, on-going research projects, and student services.

Since the Doctor of Nursing Practice is an extra commitment of time and resources, many students wonder whether it is necessary to earn a DNP rather than the NP designation that comes from a Masters degree. Nurse practitioners have traditionally used the master’s degree to obtain advanced education and begin working in their specialty field. However, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recommended back in 2004 that the new standard for entry become the Doctor of Nursing Practice by 2015, stating that “The DNP provides a clinical option for advanced preparation in nursing practice that is more comparable to other intra-professional education[i].”
The AACN includes in its DNP requirements of 2015 that the following three subjects must be completed as separate courses, not combined with other subject matters, within DNP programs:
A DNP project is required at the completion of the program to synthesize learning and so the student may provide evidence of advanced knowledge in their practice areas.
DNP Graduates may find that their degree has many benefits to them in terms of career advancement, pay and educational achievement. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for APRNs in 2014 was $102,670[ii]compared to $66,640 for RNs[iii].
FACT: Overall, job opportunities for advanced practice registered nurses are likely to be excellent. The projected increase in employment for Nurse Practitioners is 35% between 2014 and 2024[iv]
If the idea of hands-on learning and studying amongst other brilliant nurses is appealing to you, start reviewing graduate nursing schools and universities so you can find the DNP program that aligns with your needs!
