Certification is voluntary, but a good SLP master’s program may help prepare you to meet the CCC criteria.
What are Types of Speech Language Pathology Master’s Degrees?
Colleges that offer master’s degree for speech pathology may have different names for the degree, such as MS SLP, MS CD, or M.Ed CD. Usually the only difference is what school or department the program is part of within the university. Programs with a focus on SLP in school settings may be part of the college of education and confer the M.Ed. degree. Health sciences colleges are more likely to offer the MS SLP (speech language pathology) or MS CD (communicative disorders). No matter what the degree is called, all masters in speech language pathology follow similar curricula and clinical requirements, because all accredited programs meet ASHA guidelines.
Why Some Online SLP Programs Don’t Require the GRE
Because AHSA accreditation is a complex and rigorous process for colleges that offer masters degrees for speech pathology, many do require GRE scores to help ensure that incoming students are up to the challenge of an intensive program. But there are some good reasons to offer speech pathology master’s programs with no GRE. Here are a few:
#1: Undergraduate GPA Minimum
Most schools expect students to have an undergrad degree in communication disorders or prior coursework in prerequisite topics. It’s common for schools to expect a minimum 3.0 GPA for these prerequisites. This may help show your aptitude for the material. Prospective students need to consider GPA before applying.
#2: Other Graduate Degree
Maybe you’re considering a career change and already hold a grad degree in another field. Or maybe you’re working toward a very specialized niche of speech language pathology work where dual master’s degrees are helpful. Either way, if you already hold a master’s degree, many schools may let that stand in for current GRE scores.
#3: High Demand for SLP Certified Workers
According to St. Ambrose University’s Master of Speech Language Pathology fact sheet, “Across the nation, funded SLP positions are going unfilled due to a lack of qualified professionals.” With that level of demand, it makes sense to help students begin an SLP master’s program as soon as they’re ready, without spending time preparing for, taking, and submitting scores for the GRE.
