5 Common Admissions Requirements for Online MSN Programs – Online MSN Without GRE

Nursing graduate programs are designed for working professionals, and can have a variety of admissions requirements, from a high GPA to years of clinical experience. Below are some of the most common requests by admissions offices at nursing schools offering an online MSN.

#1: RN Licensure

RN licensure is required for online MSN programs, as they are designed for working, licensed registered nurses to expand their clinical role or specialize in administration or education within the healthcare field.

#2: BSN Degree

Most online MSN programs require students to hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited program. There are some programs designed to accept students holding a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field.

Some of these will have basic nursing prerequisites incorporated into the core curricula, or a requirement that you first complete prerequisite courses in fields like statistics, health assessment, or nursing research.

#3: GPA of 3.0 or Higher

It is common for online MSN programs to require a GPA of at least 3.0 for admission to the program. Some programs may grant conditional acceptance to students applying with a lower GPA if they meet GPA requirements in their first few credits of graduate study.

If you have low undergraduate grades, there are still nursing schools that accept a low GPA.

#4: Letters of Recommendation

Most MSN programs request up to three letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources, such as a clinical supervisor, professor, or practicing advanced practice nurse. Recommendations from people in high-level roles who mentored or supervised you and can speak to your dedication and work ethic will present the best picture of your ability to admissions officers.

#5: Resume and Statement of Goals

Many online MSN programs request a current resume detailing educational background and work experience, and a statement of goals detailing your interests and reasons for pursuing your specific nursing specialty.

There is great variation in clinical work requirements by program, but detailing your work experience can be valuable in the admissions process even when it’s not required. The resume and goals statement are a place to describe clinical experience and why it may help you to succeed in your graduate studies.

Fun Fact

Employment of advanced practice nurses, such as nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners is projected to grow 31 percent from 2016 to 2026—much faster than the average for all occupations. This is due to an increased emphasis on preventive care and the need to care for a large aging population.
