Considerations for Finding One Year MPH Programs
Sometimes, it may make sense to take as long as you need to pursue your education, and at other times students feel the pressure to graduate as soon as possible in order to pursue their ambitions. While 1 year MPH programs may be a rarity, the few of them that are out there could offer a fast-track timeline to launching your new career goals.
How Long Does a Masters in Public Health Take to Earn, On Average?
Many MPH programs are designed to be earned in about two years. However, there are notable exceptions, like the one year MPH programs we listed above. In addition, the following factors may influence the amount of time it takes to earn your degree:
- Whether you study full time or part time
- How many credits you take per term
- Scheduling issues (for example, some courses may only be offered in certain semesters)
- Whether you have eligible transfer credits (these may help you earn your degree in less time)
One Year MPH Programs List
Of graduate schools offering shorter-term Master of Public Health programs, the following institutions offer MPH programs designed to be earned in a year or less:
- The George Washington University
- Johns Hopkins University
- University of Southern California
- New York University
However, you may have an easier time finding MPH programs designed to be earned in 1.5 years (18 months). And, many programs offer ways to potentially fit your studies into your busy schedule – even if they ultimately propose a longer-term degree plan. Here are three considerations to keep in mind as you explore MPH programs that may help you save time:
- Credits Matter. MPH programs may require you to earn anywhere from 36 (or fewer) credits to over 60 credits! Since each program may have different objectives and curriculum structures, the number of credits required can vary widely…as can the length of time it takes to pursue the degree. If you’re set on earning your MPH degree in a year, look for programs that require fewer credits. And if you’ve completed prior, eligible graduate coursework, look for transfer-friendly policies that could potentially help you save even more time.
- Reconsider Your Work Schedule. Many one year Masters in Public Health programs recommend that you don’t work during the time you’re pursuing your MPH. Why? Because the program’s accelerated format may require you to devote most of your time to your coursework. Take USC’s one year online MPH program, which requires around 40 hours per week; that may be hard to handle if you’re also working full time! Fortunately, many universities may offer MPH programs that you can pursue at a slower pace, while potentially balancing your career with your studies.
