Grad Schools That Don’t Require the GRE

Wonder if there are Grad Schools That Don’t Require the GRE exam that you could apply to? The short answer: Yes!

Although a popular piece of the US graduate admissions process, you may not always need GRE scores for graduate school programs. For example, some graduate schools may offer GRE waivers for graduate students should you meet their conditions.

Online and offline programs from universities may also have the ‘No GRE’ policy in place for doctorate programs. For instance, applicants to John’s Hopkins University’s Doctor of Ed (EdD) program need a master’s degree, but the GRE is optional.

Is the GRE Test Required for Grad School?

Depends. While many schools don’t require the GRE, they may have other admissions policies. For example, some schools may de-emphasize the GRE in specific circumstances. Further, others may only require the GRE if you plan to apply for funding or fellowships. This is the case for the MS in Electrical Engineering at Villanova.

Remember, just because the GRE may be taken out of the admissions equation, it doesn’t mean a grad school has low standards. Research each program and as a result learn about grad schools that don’t require GRE scores.

Should I Apply to Grad Schools That Don’t Require a GRE?

Grad schools that don’t require a GRE may be the avenue for you to pursue an advanced degree. While many factors play a role in GRE requirements, most are dictated by the individual graduate program.

No GRE Required: Five Common Policies That Waive the GRE

Generally speaking, a few common policies exist between grad schools that don’t require the GRE. With this in mind, it also isn’t a great idea to make sweeping generalizations. While researching graduate programs, always refer to their admissions process and speak to an advisor for guidance.

Undergraduate GPA Minimum

Universities without GRE requirements often still set minimum GPA requirements. The minimum is both program and school specific, as each may have its own standards. Generally, minimum GPA requirements range from 2.8 to 3.0.

Professional Experience

If you have work experience, then some universities may wave the GRE. Additionally, a GRE waiver may be given at the master’s and certificate levels. For for example, at American University, the GRE requirement is waived for several programs.

No GRE Policy with Program Specific GRE Requirements

Schools like Pratt University have a general policy of no GRE. However, they do make exceptions for some programs. In fact, the GRE is required for Art Ed, Art History, the combined Art History and Master of Library Sci programs. In other words, a grad school’s general ‘no GRE’ policy may have some attached fine print.

GMAT or GRE

In some cases, applicants may need to take the GMAT instead of the GRE. For example, some Master’s in Finance (MSF) programs needs the GMAT. They state the GRE could be used in place.

Other Graduate Degree

If you hold another graduate degree, you may find grad programs where the GRE requirement is waived. For example, partner school, Frontier Nursing University’s DNP program, needs no GRE. However, applicants must hold an MSN, MPH, Master’s in Midwifery or a related master’s degree from a nationally (CCNE or ACEN) accredited nursing program.

Masters Programs with No GRE Requirements

Do all Masters programs require the GRE? Generally, some master’s degree programs have no GRE requirements. However, they may have substitute assessment strategies in place. For example, they may assess your portfolio, resume, sample of written work and the like.

MFA Programs

Master of Fine Arts programs generally want to see examples of your best recent work. For instance, partner school Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) doesn’t ask for GRE scores but does have specific guidelines with respect to your portfolio.

Executive MBA Programs

Because EMBA programs typically target experienced executives, they do not generally look at GRE requirements. While the number of years vary by program and school, it could range from five to seven. Said programs usually waive the GRE because they aim to help students expand professional business skills. However, an applicant may need a solid resume and might need to do well in an interview.

Beyond eMBA programs, a fair number of MBA programs also accept no GMAT or GMAT waivers.

Regular MBA Programs

While many do, some MBA programs may not require the GRE or the GMAT. For example, some online MBA programs target students with at least three years of professional work or managerial experience. In some programs, applicants could also apply to have the GMAT waived in the case of significant work experience.

Terminal Master’s Programs

Some terminal master’s programs such as the Master of Architecture (MArch) may also favor a portfolio over test scores. For example, partner school Roger Williams University.

Online Masters Programs

While a broad category with many exceptions, many online Masters programs do not require the GRE. Also, it is important to remember this does not mean the school has low expectations or less rigorous standards.

These programs may market specifically to at-work professionals. Or, the grad student may have scores that are no longer valid, but their experience is of value. Finally, the platform and no GRE policy gives more accessible to a wider array of students.

Nonetheless, check to see that the school is accredited and values learning over profit. You may prefer a school where you have to submit scores rather than a comparable program that appears to lack quality standards.
