A Master of Science in Management - generally abbreviated as MiM, MSc or MSM – is a research-oriented program bearing some resemblance to the MBA. However, the MBA focuses on practical, hands-on aspects of business administration, and the MSc focuses on research in a particular area of management. In addition, admission into a Master of Science in Management may not require candidates to amass work experience prior to application; it is common for prospective MBA students to spend a few years in the field before applying.
The MSc is a good option for students transitioning directly from college to graduate school, as it may not require work experience. In contrast, most MBA admissions committees look favorably on at least two to three years of experience in the field. As a result, the average age of MSc students tends to be younger than the MBA student. Some MSc programs may require applicants to have an undergraduate degree in business or economics. Many programs require GMAT scores, and TOEFL scores, if applicable.
