About the field of Theology: Theology and Divinity programs come in a variety of formats from institutions with a variety of orientations but have a common theme of service and active religious involvement. These are the professional degrees of religion. In most mainline denominations, a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree is required for ordination. These may be also referred to as a Master of Arts in Theology (M.A.T.), Master of Arts in Theological Studies (M.T.S.), Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (M.A.P.S.), Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (M.A.P.M.) the Doctor of Ministry in Preaching (D.Min.), etc. Degrees are conferred by a wide variety of institutions ranging from Theological seminaries and Bible Colleges through large universities. In addition to the practicing degrees of Theology more specific degrees can be found in Ministry and Pastoral Counseling . More general areas include Religious Studies and Religious Education .
