The field of Post-Secondary Education (Higher Education) Professionals who teach at the undergraduate level and beyond are often trained as experts in a specific field of study, as opposed to the focus placed on pedagogy for elementary and secondary school teachers. Higher-education teachers, of course, do possess a certain amount of knowledge about typical teaching issues, but their strengths usually lie in the area of expertise itself. Most universities require their professors to possess a doctorate, as well as engage in research relevant to their field. Professorships in higher education are often highly regarded, and as a result, competition for them is fierce. Therefore, those who pursue them should be willing to work hard and do all they can to add to the body of relevant work in their field in order to make themselves as attractive as possible to university search committees.
