About the field of African American Studies: African American studies focus the student's attention on issues of culture, society, history, and development of the African American community, and the implications of that development. Students generally apply the knowledge they have learned in African American studies to a larger context, whether that be in a social, civil, academic, or international setting. Often African American studies will be available as a concentration in a related degree field. Related or complimentary fields may include: African language and literature , American studies , Canadian studies , ethics , Central American Studies , cultural studies , history , international studies , liberal studies , Middle Eastern studies , Native studies , social sciences , urban design , and women's studies .
