Program Description:
The Master of Arts in Counseling is intended to prepare Christian counselors with the knowledge, skills, and insight needed to practice counseling in the church, non-profit organizations, clinical or school settings. This program is designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure by the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.
Accreditation:
Western Seminary is accredited to award master's and doctor's degrees by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), and is an accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applications must give evidence of personal character, interpersonal relationships, goals, motivation, and potential for future counseling ministry as fitting the program. These will include a vital spiritual life, growing and nurturing relationships with people, commitment to a biblical/theological orientation to the therapeutic process, and vocational aspirations involving the care and nurture of people. As a part of the admission process all counseling applicants will undergo a background criminal check.
Applicants, for whom English is not their first language, are required to demonstrate evidence of mastery of the English language for graduate study. The standard for this is through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For admission to an M.A. in Counseling program, the seminary requires requires scores of 20 (each) on the reading and writing sections and 25 (each) on the speaking and listening sections of the TOEFL-iBt.

International Student Requirements:
Prior to applying to Western Seminary, international students must complete a Pre-Application that can be requested from the Admissions Department. If an international student is encouraged to apply to Western Seminary, he or she is required to provide a financial guarantee that will cover his or her study and living expenses for one year. It is expected that, barring unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding will be available from the same or equally dependable sources for subsequent years. The financial guarantee must include living expenses for any dependents as well. The guarantee must indicate the individual(s) or organization(s) that will actually provide the funds for study and living expenses.
