Program Information
Degree Offered
M.A.-Special Education
Format: Online
Program Description:
The Master of Arts in Special Education is delivered entirely online. The program is a part of the Southern Regional Electronic Campus, meaning that all students pay in-state tuition regardless of residency.
The program has a history of serving students at a distance. In 1989, the program began delivering courses via satellite and migrated to online as the technology evolved.
Courses are offered in the evenings through a combination of live, real time interactive class sessions via desktop videoconferencing plus other web-based activities available on demand. Field and practicum experiences are completed at local school sites proposed by the student and approved by the program.
Three program options are available: certification only, certification plus master’s degree, and master’s degree only. Since certification is offered, students do not have to hold teacher certification to be admitted to the program.
The program offers six different tracks of studies including:
* Autism Spectrum Disorders
* Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education
* Gifted Education
* Low Vision/Blindness
* Multicategorical Special Education
* Severe/Multiple Disabilities
Accreditation:
The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and meets professional standards of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). WVU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
