Program Description:

The Government and International Affairs (GIA) is one of three programs within the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at Virginia Tech in the National Capital Region (the greater Washington DC metro area). GIA's urban campus is in the heart of historic Old Town Alexandria, a few miles across the Potomac from the Capitol. From its campus in Alexandria, GIA faculty offer full time and part time graduate students evening seminar courses culminating in a Masters in Public and International Affairs (MPIA) and/or a PhD in Globalization and Governance (G&G). Online course offerings are also available for those with busy travel schedules. The GIA program has an international faculty and student community. Its curriculum is organized around the new 'global security' challenges facing the Obama administration, collective systematic foreign policy questions that no state alone can solve. Students can work with Dr Toal in a 'global conflict' track that addresses questions of post-Communist transition, human security and so-called ethnic conflict in the Balkans and Caucasus. Students can specialize with Dr Peters on conflict analysis and peace making initiatives in the Middle East, most especially concerning Israel/Palestine, Syria and Lebannon. Alternatively students can work with Dr Datz on international political economy, trade and global financial institutions. Students can specialize in the study of the politics of cultural memory, and gender/race/class/ethnicity identity struggles with Dr Karen Till. Finally, students can specialize in 'critical geopolitics' with Dr Toal and the discourse analysis of American and Russian foreign policy. GIA faculty are supported by faculty in other SPIA programs and beyond, with specializations in urbananization, environmental politics, international health policy, biosecurity, homeland security and international trade negotiations.
