Program Description:

The Department of History in the College of Humanities and Sciences offers a Master of Arts in History degree. The program provides students with diverse opportunities to further their education, to establish professional credentials, to prepare for entry into doctoral programs, and to enrich their knowledge of history. The historians in our department have consistently won numerous highly competitive grants including the Guggenheim Fellowship; several major research grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities; Fulbright Fellowships; and American Council of Learned Societies, American Philosophical Society and Virginia Foundation for the Humanities grants.The department has published approximately 40 books with such distinguished publishers as Cambridge, Knopf, Oxford, and Princeton. The department also has a strong record of numerous articles in leading journals, including the American Journal of Legal History, Journal of Southern History, Journal of Contemporary History, Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, and Jahrbƒcher fƒr Geschichte Osteuropas. Faculty members have served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Southern History, Journal of Supreme Court History, Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
