(Beginning In Fall 2000, This Degree Is Available On A Distance Learning Basis)The Department of Rehabilitation Counseling in the School of Allied Health Professions offers a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling. Graduates from accredited Rehabilitation Counseling programs are typically trained in counseling theory and techniques; assessment of clients and their environments; medical, psychosocial, and vocational aspects of adult disability; human development; cultural diversity; ethics; vocational evaluation; career counseling; job placement; and disability policy and legislation. In collaboration with the faculty advisor, students may wish to design a program of study around a specific area of interest. Specializations in substance abuse, mental health, physical/sensory disabilities, and gerontology are the most common. The minimum degree requirement is 48 graduate credits including 33 credits of didactic course work, 100 hours of fieldwork, 600 hours of internship, six credits of electives, and a comprehensive examination. The Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, in cooperation with the Department of Gerontology, provides its degree seeking students with an opportunity to earn a graduate Certificate in Aging Studies while concurrently completing the requirements for the M.S. in rehabilitation Counseling.
