Program Description:
The program provides students with expertise in much of the literature written in English, highly refined interpretive skills, and familiarity with the major intellectual currents shaping the discipline of literary study today. The range of approaches reflects the quality of the experience each student is expected to gain from the program: familiarization with much of the literature written in English will combine with a development of skills and self-awareness in the critical sensibility. Advanced training in the field is completed by close guidance from faculty and a high degree of interaction among faculty and students. The student will move through a series of small, intensive classes toward a Master's thesis or a combined oral / written field examination. Whether a student chooses the Master's degree as a terminal degree or intends to pursue doctoral studies, the program conforms to a high standard of intellectual rigor.
